Dar es Salaam - A Tanzanian former ambassador to Italy and two other diplomats appeared before magistrates on Monday on charges of fraud and pocketing about two million euros of government funds in a property scam.
Ex-ambassador Costa Mahalu, the embassy's former financial attaché Stewart Migwano and Grace Martin, a counsellor at the mission in Rome, all pleaded not guilty to the charges at Kisutu court.
Prosecutors from the Prevention of Corruption Bureau told the court that the defendants had jointly and fraudulently used documents showing that they had bought a building in Rome for four million dollars, while its real cost was € 1 032 913.90.
The accused committed the offences between September and October 2002 in Rome, said chief prosecutor Joseph Holle.
