Moz floods: More aid needed
13/02/2007 21:11 - (SA)
Maputo - Most Mozambicans threatened by floods in the Zambezi valley are out of danger and food distribution is now the main concern for officials, said the disaster management agency on Tuesday.
"Most people are out of risk, but we may have 400 to 500 people that we still need to be rescued," said Paolo Zucula, the head of the national disaster control institute.
"Our big problems for the moment are the logistics to supply food," he said. "We have enough food until the end of the month of February."
About 70 000 people have been evacuated to safety in four flood-hit provinces: Tete, Zambezia, Manica and Sofala.
The Zambezi, which originates in Zambia and courses through Mozambique before flowing into the Indian Ocean, has been flowing at dangerously high levels following flash floods sparked by torrential rains.
Floods in the four central provinces have claimed 29 lives since December, destroyed thousands of homes and inundated vast swathes of farmland.
Deluges in Mozambique in 2000-2001 claimed more than 700 lives. The southern African country's peak rainfall season is from the end of February to early March.
