Abuja - Fifty-five people were killed on Monday when a truck overturned on the Funtua-Dandume highway in northwest Nigeria's Katsina State, said reports.
A truck carrying cows and about 150 passengers overturned near Dandume town on its way to Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital.
Thirty people died on the spot, while others died at nearby Funtua General Hospital to where they were taken.
Two of the dead were still trapped in the truck as men of the state-run road safety agency, the Federal Road Safety Corps, worked to remove bodies from the wreckage.
Katsina state sector commander of the FRSC, Umar Gummi, confirmed the number of dead persons who were removed from the accident scene.
He said the truck driver was trying to avoid a pothole when he lost control of the vehicle, which overturned.
Katsina state commissioner of police, Alhaji Murtala Abbas, also confirmed that the report of the accident had been lodged with the police.
