Graft: Zambian minister sacked
01/03/2007 13:01 - (SA)
Lusaka - Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has sacked his lands minister following a spate of corruption allegations involving top officials in her ministry, a government statement said on Thursday.
No explanation was given for the dismissal of Gladys Nyirongo but the move followed widespread reports that senior officials in the ministry of lands had been allocating land in exchange for bribes.
Mwanawasa's spokesperson John Musukuma said Bradford Machila, the deputy justice minister, had been appointed to replace Nyirongo.
Mwanawasa is on record as rating the lands ministry as the most corrupt in his government and had previously promised to tackle the situation.
Two weeks ago, the ministry's permanent secretary Mukuka Zimba was suspended pending a corruption investigation.
Mwanawasa has made the fight against corruption the cornerstone of his government and has threatened ministers with instant dismissal if implicated in graft.
