Lagos - Five million dollars allegedly stolen by a Nigerian governor has been traced to the Bahamas according to the head of Nigeria's anti-corruption agency cited in reports published on Saturday.
Nuhu Ribadu, chairman of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was quoted as saying by local newspapers here that the authorities in Bahamas had alerted the agency about the money.
However, he did not give the name of the governor involved, but said the suspect was seeking re-election in next month's governorship elections.
"The case is in court that is why I will not mention the name. The reason why I mentioned this is to show you what our elites are doing to our economy," said Ribadu.
He said efforts were going on to recover the money.
Ribadu said the majority of Nigeria's 36 state governors have been investigated for corruption and at least four have been indicted and subsequently removed from office.
Millions of dollars in state funds are believed to have been stolen from government treasury by officials in the past.
The EFCC which has recovered part of this money since it was set up by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2001, has vowed to prevent corrupt politicians from contesting next month's general elections.
