  • Johannesburg - The head of cellphone giant MTN in Cameroon, Campbell Utton, 51, was among those aboard the Boeing 737 that went missing over Cameroon, Rapport reported on Sunday.

Another of the seven South African aboard the flight was named as Charles January, 36.

A search for the Kenyan aircraft resumed on Sunday morning in bad weather conditions, Kenya Airways spokesperson Glenn Lewingston said.

"The search for flight KQ 507 in the dense forest is on, but bad weather is making it difficult for rescue workers."

The search for the aircraft was suspended on Saturday night due to bad weather.

The 737-800 aircraft left Douala in Cameroon at five minutes past midnight but failed to arrive in Nairobi, Kenya, at 06:16 as scheduled, said Lewington.

The last message from the aircraft was received by the Douala control tower immediately after take off. A distress signal was picked up on the West Coast of Africa. Cameroonian authorities initiated a search that was concentrated about 100km south west of Yaound.

The seven South Africans were among the 105 passengers and 9 crew members aboard the aircraft.

Other people on board were 35 Cameroonians, 15 Indians, six Chinese, six Ivorians, six Nigerians, and five Britons.

The nationalities of three still had to be confirmed. Nineteen of the passengers had a connecting flight to Johannesburg.

It was not yet known if there were any survivors, and names of those aboard the aircraft will only be released once their next-of-kin had been informed, he said.

Kenya Airways have set up an international passenger information centre for information on the aircraft. Enquiries can be made on +27-11-207-1100.
