06/05/2007 20:46 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The wreckage of the Kenya Airways plane has been found, the South African Department of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday.
Department spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said the Cameroonian government had officially confirmed that the wreckage of the plane had been found a 10-minute flight from Douala.
The 737-800 aircraft left Douala in Cameroon at five minutes past midnight on Saturday but failed to arrive in Nairobi, Kenya later on.
Mamoepa said rescue operations on Saturday had been hampered by bad weather but resumed on Sunday morning with assistance from France, Britain and America.
"Seven South Africans were reported to be onboard this ill-fated flight," he said.
However, Kenyan Airways spokesperson Glenn Lewington told Sapa around 20:20 that the search had been called off for the evening and "nothing has been found".
He said the search would continue "first thing in the morning".
