African migrants head for Spain

  • 1 100+ illegals intercepted
  • Las Palmas De Gran Canaria - More than 220 undocumented immigrants were crossing over on Monday from Africa to Spain's Canary Islands, after the arrival of more than 500 at the weekend, said emergency services.

Two boats carrying a total of 118 migrants landed on Tenerife and Lanzarote, while another boat with 103 occupants was approaching Tenerife.

The migrants, who included four women and about 20 minors, were reportedly in good health.

The opposition conservatives and the governing Socialists traded accusations over illegal immigration during the weekend.

Campaigning for the May 27 local elections in the Canaries capital Las Palmas, conservative leader Mariano Rajoy accused Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's government of having encouraged immigration by granting massive amnesties to illegals.

Socialist representative Pedro Zerolo countered that the previous conservative government had followed similar policies, legalising the situation of hundreds of thousands of immigrants.

The arrival of warmer weather has increased the numbers of migrants landing in the Canaries, which received more than 30 000 of them in 2006.
