Kenyan cops kill 21 raiders

Nairobi - Kenyan police killed at least 21 cattle raiders who had attacked several villages in the restive Rift Valley Region, officials said on Tuesday.
Regional police chief Everett Wasige said the police raid took place over the weekend in Laikipia district, north of the capital Nairobi.
"We managed to kill at least 21 raiders, but we are still combing the bushes because villagers claim that more bodies are still in area," Wasige told AFP by telephone.
Local residents told Kenyan newspapers that they had counted up to 31 bodies on the ground in two villages raided in Laikipia.
Residents said 500 raiders had taken part in the attack, according to police.
Wasige said hundreds of police were deployed in the area to pursue the raiders believed to be from the Samburu tribe.
Cattle rustling has increased in the region in recent months as owners seek to restock herds badly affected by a searing drought across east Africa over the last two years.
