Maputo - More than a thousand women and children from Mozambique are trafficked annually to South Africa, a Unicef report revealed on Tuesday.
The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) report on child sexual abuse said the women and children were used in prostitution or as cheaply paid domestic workers.
The reports said 32% of the trafficked children were aged between seven and 17, and they worked in the informal sector once they were in South Africa.
The report noted that the Mozambican government's institutions working for children should do much to prevent the trafficking of minors and women.
The report also said that in the last four years more than 6 000 children in Mozambique were sexually abused in schools, at home or by relatives.
In its report Unicef said organisations contacted for the research noted that Mozambican schools were not safe for young girls.
Unicef urged the government to take severe measures to punish teachers who sexually abused students.
