Security beefed up at Zim border
12/07/2007 14:40  - (SA)

  • Johannesburg - Security was beefed up in and around the Beit Bridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe, ahead of an SA parliamentary delegation visit, the SABC reported on Thursday

The delegation was made up of the peace and stability cluster of parliament.

Police were deployed at almost every point at the border post. Parliamentarians were visiting after numerous media reports of allegations of bribery and corruption related to illegal immigrants, who allegedly often passed through without valid documentation.

They had already visited a number of other border posts in the past few days.

A number of police, customs and immigration officers had in the past been arrested for allegedly taking bribes at border posts.
