Cops save 62 'child labourers'
17/07/2007 23:33 - (SA)
Lagos - Nigerian police have intercepted a truck in the country's south carrying 62 potential child labourers to the economic hub of Lagos, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.
"We intercepted the trailer and to our utmost surprise, found 62 children crammed inside," said Peter Ogboi, the police spokesperson for the southern Edo state.
He said investigations revealed that the children, who included a three-year-old girl, were taken from their parents from the southern state of Cross Rivers.
Ogboi said some suspects had been arrested and would soon be prosecuted.
Child trafficking is punishable by a maximum 10-year prison term.
West African children are often taken or bought from their families and made to work in mines, plantations or as domestic help.
Some are sold into prostitution, and a few are killed or tortured in black magic rituals.
