Kibaki re-appoints 'graft' MP
25/07/2007 08:29 - (SA)
Nairobi - Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki on Tuesday re-appointed to the cabinet a graft-linked ally who resigned last year owing to allegations of corruption, said officials.
The Presidential Press Service said Kibaki reappointed ex-finance minister David Mwararia as the new environment and natural resources minister, five months before the country held civic parliamentary and presidential elections.
Mwararia resigned early last year after he was named in Anglo Leasing scandal, a dubious tender scams to defraud the government of $250m through payment of money to shadowy firms over security and defence contracts.
In November 2006, Kibaki renamed Kiraitu Murungi as the energy minister.
Murungi had quit from the justice portfolio after he was named alongside Mwiraria in the scandal that soiled the government efforts to fight official corruption.
Kibaki was expected to seek a second and final term in the December general elections.
