Madrid - Four Moroccan immigrants who tried to reach the Spanish coast via their windsurf equipment were rescued offshore at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, north of Morocco, the Spanish civil guard said on Tuesday.
The rescue was made on Sunday in an area around Ceuta, a spokesperson for the civil guard said.
"There were four Moroccan immigrants aged 23 to 24 years," said the spokesperson. "There were two on the windsurf board," he added.
After the rescue the four were arrested and handed over to Moroccan authorities, said the same source.
According to numbers released on Sunday by the interior minister, 6 306 illegal immigrants landed in Spain during the first six months this year, primarily in the Canary Islands, along the southern Andalusian coast and in the Balearic Islands in the eastern Mediterranean.
