Kisumu - At least 20 people were killed and several injured after an articulated lorry smashed into a passenger bus in western Kenya, said police on Wednesday.

According to police, 13 were killed on the spot after the lorry lost control and rammed into the oncoming bus in the town of Yala.

Five people died while being evacuated and two passed away in hospital, they added.

Area police commander Humprey Wanzala said: "So far, reports indicate 20 people died ... it was a very bad accident."

He added that the injured were admitted in nearby hospitals and in Kisumu, about 350km northwest of Nairobi.
