Bujumbura - Six Congolese soldiers were detained by the Burundian navy for repeatedly attacking fishing boats on Lake Tanganyika and stealing their catch, said a military spokesperson on Wednesday.
Adolphe Manirakiza said: "Yesterday, our navy arrested six Congolese soldiers as they were looting Burundian boats in Burundi's territorial waters on Lake Tanganyika."
Lake Tanganyika, Africa's second largest lake, formed a natural border between Burundi and the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The spokesperson said the soldiers, who were in uniform, were armed and claimed to be acting upon the orders of their superior.
He said the soldiers were found in possession of "fuel jerricans, money and several crates of fish they had already looted", adding that the navy intervened after complaints from Burundian fishermen in recent months.
