Dakar - Prosecutors demanded jail terms of between three months and one year for eight people who went on trial on Monday on charges of lewd dancing authorities say was offensive to public morals.
The private station Radio Futurs Media reported that at the closed hearing the state prosecutor requested jail terms of six months for the three dancers, including Ndeye Gueye, an icon of Senegalese dance regularly invited by singers to perform for their music videos or concerts.
The prosecutor sought the stiffest sentence against the cameraman who shot a video of their dancing at a private party in a Dakar nightclub in 2005, according to a journalist who attended the start of the trial before it was closed to the public.
The nightclub's owner and manager, a Spanish man who initiated the party and the organiser of the party - a DJ on a local radio station - have also been charged.
The video of the party has been circulating on the Internet for several months and is also available in Dakar markets on CDs.
The dancers have said they were deceived as they were told the event was a contest and that no recording would be made.
Several Islamic associations have joined the case as civil parties, while several public figures including politicians have defended the dancers.
