4 000 Burundi teachers strike

Bujumbura - At least 4 000 teachers in Burundi have launched an open-ended strike three weeks into the new school year, claiming their salaries have not been paid.
The teachers, whose actions paralysed the tiny central African nation's state secondary schools, said authorities had ignored claims stretching back years.
Philbert Ngezahayo, head of the secondary school teachers' union, said: "Teachers decided to go on strike because the government has refused to implement their demands which are well-known by the authorities since five years ago."
The teachers, who earned an average $35 to $40 a month, were also seeking the creation of a fund to build houses.
An education ministry official, Venan Nyobewe, said that the government was in talks with teachers' representatives to find an agreement, and had set aside money in next year's budget to cover the claims.
