  • Lagos - Gunmen in speedboats attacked an offshore oil vessel in Nigeria early on Friday, said Italian energy giant Eni SpA.

Nobody had been reported injured in the attack on Eni's support vessel, the company said in a statement posted on its website. A spokesperson for the company refused further comment.

The Niger Delta had been the scene of frequent disputes between oil companies and communities who had for years demanded a greater share of the wealth in Africa's largest crude producer. The region remained desperately poor despite its great natural bounty.

The government of President Umaru Yar'Adua had stepped up efforts to calm the region, and violence had waned since he took power on May 29. But the latest attacks - including one on Sunday - could set back plans for formal talks between the government and the main armed groups.
