Crash: More deaths 'expected'
30/10/2007 12:10 - (SA)
Lagos - A petrol tanker crashed in Nigeria at the weekend engulfing six other vehicles in flames and burning at least 30 people to death, said police.
Police officer Chris Alaba said: "We have removed no fewer than 30 burnt bodies from the scene of the tragedy on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
"There could still be more deaths because several of those hospitalised have first degree burns."
Alaba said the tanker was trying to avoid a pothole on the busy road when it tipped on its side, spilling the petrol which caught fire.
Accidents took place regularly on Nigeria's poorly maintained inter-city roads, due to disregard of traffic rules, speeding and careless driving.
Last week, 17 people were killed after a passenger bus collided with an oncoming truck on the same Lagos-Ibadan highway.
