  • Cairo - Six Italian tourists including a seven year-old boy were killed in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Thursday after their minibus collided with an oncoming truck, said a police official.

The Egyptian minibus driver was also killed, said the official. The condition of two other Italians hurt in the crash remained unclear.

According to the official, they were being treated at Sharm el-Sheikh hospital. About 6 000 people died and 30 000 were injured in road accidents in Egypt each year.

Traffic regulations were often badly enforced and vehicles were poorly maintained. Many coastal and desert roads allowed for high speeds, and accidents caused by reckless overtaking were frequent.
