Bus plunges into river, 11 die
12/11/2007 08:47 - (SA)
Nairobi - At least 11 people died and dozens were injured in Kenya's Rift Valley region on Sunday after a bus overturned and plunged into a river, said an official.
District commissioner Jamleck Mbuva said the bus left the road near Bomet trading post, about 170km northwest of the capital, Nairobi.
At least 43 passengers were taken to hospital, many with grievous injuries. Survivors told Kenyan media that the driver appeared sleepy when he lost control of the bus.
The accident took place less than a week after 17 passengers died when a bus collided with a trailer and exploded in the country's eastern region.
Road accidents were frequent in the east African nation, where drivers routinely violated traffic regulations and road conditions were often poor.
