Lagos - Nigerian police have killed 785 armed robbers and lost 62 officers in gunbattles in the past three months, spokesperson Haz Iwendi said on Friday.

He said: "Some 785 robbers were killed in shootouts with the police in various parts of the country, while we lost 62 of our men in the encounters in the last three months."

He said 1 561 robbery suspects had been arrested and scores of arms and rounds of ammunition also recovered from the bandits.

"Some of the suspects are in courts," he said.

Iwendi said the police had strengthened security to curb an upsurge in robberies in the West African country of 140 million inhabitants.
