Lagos - Twenty-one people have died and several injured after a bus rammed into an oncoming truck in southeastern Nigeria, say police.

Senior police officer Olisa Arinze said: "Sixteen people died on the spot while five died later in the hospital."

He said the accident took place late on Saturday on a road linking Enugu, the capital of the southern Enugu state, to Nigeria's oil capital, Port Harcourt.

"The driver of the bus was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided with the oncoming truck," he said, adding that many others were injured.

Accidents took place regularly on Nigeria's poorly maintained roads.
