Nairobi - Eleven people have died and several others injured in Kenya's central region after a passenger van collided with a trailer, say police.

The van was attempting to overtake when it rammed into the oncoming trailer in Makuyu, about 90km northeast of the capital, Nairobi, said regional police investigator Sebastian Ndaru.

He added: "Nine died on the spot while two passed away in a nearby hospital."

Road accidents were frequent in the east African nation, where traffic regulations were routinely violated by drivers and road conditions were often poor.
