Nigeria's leading paper on strike
28/11/2007 12:50  - (SA)

  • Journalists walk off job
  • 3 journos up for defamation
  • TV journo 'deteriorating'
  • Lagos - A strike by employees on Nigeria's leading newspaper, The Guardian, has kept the daily off the newsstands for three weeks, says a senior editor.

"We are still on strike because the management is not ready to grant our demands for improved welfare and general working conditions," said the editor, who asked not to be named.

He said the paper's management had even threatened to sack the entire workforce, including journalists, printers and other staff, if they refused to report for work immediately.

"We are convening a meeting this afternoon to deliberate on the lingering industrial action and respond to the threat to sack the entire workforce," he said.

Workers on the newspaper went on strike on November 06 to press for a 50% pay rise and a staff bus, among other demands.

The Guardian, established in 1983, was regarded as the flagship of the Nigerian press. It enjoyed wide readership among the elite, politicians, government officials and policy makers.
