Cops seize cannabis in Mali
06/12/2007 08:29 - (SA)
Bamako - Malian authorities seized 2.1 tons of cannabis in one of the biggest drug busts so far, said an official in Bamako on Wednesday.
Police seized 1 350kg of cannabis in Bamako and an additional 850kg in Kayes, near the border with Senegal, which came from "the same network", Border Research and Intervention Division chief Abdel Karim Konate said.
Konate added that one person had been arrested in a working-class neighbourhood in the Malian capital.
"We've outsmarted the network of those who wanted to make Mali a revolving door of narcotraffickers in West Africa," said Konate, who added, "this is one of the biggest drug busts in the history of Mali border police".
Last month, the Malian border police seized 35kg of "pure cocaine" with a street value of $3.4m in a town near the Guinean border.
