Nairobi - Pirates on Wednesday released a Japanese chemical tanker they had been holding for six weeks off the coast of Somalia, said the United States navy.
Navy spokesperson Lydia Robertson said: "The Golden Nori was released about 03:30. The ship is under way and the US navy ship USS Whidby Island is preparing teams to assist the vessel."
On Monday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs had said the pirates were threatening to kill the 22-strong crew if a $1m ransom was not paid.
