Maputo - More than 24 000 people in some districts of the southern province of Gaza in Maputo are faced with food shortages, local media reported on Thursday.

The independent daily fax sheet, A Tribuna Fax, said in a report that the affected families were from the administrative posts of Nalaze, Chivunguene in the Guija district, about 150km north of Maputo.

Guija district administrator, Zacarias Mandlate, told the paper that the situation was caused by drought in the southern provinces of Mozambique including Maputo.

The district's authorities have approached the national disaster management institute and the World Food Programme for urgent assistance.
