Alexandria - Five bodies were pulled from rubble and two women, one of them an American, were rescued after an 11-storey apartment building collapsed on Monday in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria, police said.
Some 20 people were believed to have been trapped under rubble after the collapse in the city's Luran district. The city's hospitals were all on standby as rescue work continued.
Alexandria Governor Adel Labib, who visited the site, said the 36-apartment building collapsed during restoration operations.
Official documents revealed there had been an official order against the building owner to remove all illegally-constructed parts of the building.
Two nearby buildings were severely damaged and evacuated after the collapse of the building.
