Cairo - The death toll from the collapse of a block of flats in Egypt rose to 30 on Friday, as rescuers pulled six more bodies from the rubble, a security official told AFP.
Authorities had said they thought 25 to 30 people were buried under the rubble.
The building disintegrated on Monday as construction workers carried out repairs on the first floor.
Such collapses are common in Egypt because of lax building standards and poor maintenance.
The tenement in Alexandria was originally seven storeys high, but illegally extended upwards by five more floors.
Prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for the owner, and have arrested the contractor responsible for the latest renovation work, the sources said.
