Cairo - At least 19 people were killed and 40 injured when a public bus plunged into an irrigation canal after colliding with a lorry in southern Egypt, authorities said on Monday.
The accident happened on Monday evening on a highway near Minya, 300km south of Cairo, the authorities said.
The Cairo-Aswan highway, linking cities and villages along the Nile Valley, is notorious for its high rate of fatal automobile accidents.
Road accidents are frequent in Egypt and tend to be caused by defective road planning, speeding and a poor traffic control system. More than 6 000 people die annually in car accidents in Egypt, according to police estimates.
