  • Lagos - A Nigerian court has refused to grant bail to the impeached former governor of southwest Ekiti state who is standing trial for corruption and money laundering, say court officials.

They said presiding judge Tijani Abubakar ordered that Ayo Fayose should remain in prison custody until January 21 when the Lagos court would rule on his bail application.

The former governor had been in custody since his first appearance on December 17. He was standing trial on charges of stealing millions of dollars in state funds during his almost three years as governor.

Fayose was impeached for corruption by Ekiti parliamentarians in 2006 and fled the country shortly after.

He returned home last month and reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He was arrested on the spot.

The EFCC said it was probing some 15 of Nigeria's 36 former state governors for corruption.

The corruption trial of the former governor of oil rich state of Delta, James Ibori, was due to resume on Friday in the northern city of Kaduna.

The court had last month denied him bail and remanded him in prison.

Ibori, who ruled the Delta state from 1999 to 2007, had also been under investigation by the British police after the discovery of assets in the country suspected to have been acquired with stolen money.
