Kisumu - At least one person was wounded and six homes torched in fresh political violence in western Kenya, police said on Friday.

The clashes between tribes supporting rival candidates in the December presidential elections took place on the border between the Rift Valley and Nyanza provinces, near the town of Kisii.

Nyanza provincial police commander Grace Kaindi said: "Tension is very high, people are fleeing, but we have deployed enough officers in the area to quell the tension. We have also arrested a few suspects."

According to local security sources, the fighting pitted members of the Kisii tribe who supported President Mwai Kibaki against members of the Kalenjin tribe, which sided with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

At least 600 people were killed and some 250 000 displaced by the violence that erupted after the December 30 announcement of Kibaki's re-election, according to police figures.

Odinga's camp accused the government of rigging the results and tensions between rival supporters had remained high with international mediators so far failing to negotiate a political settlement.
