  • Lusaka - A Zambian ex-military commander has returned some $30 000 he allegedly received in bribes from a British firm to ensure that it won a tender for army uniforms, an official said on Wednesday.

Wilford Funjika, who was given a two-month jail sentence late last year for corruption, theft and abuse of authority, has paid back the money to the state, said a spokesperson for the task force on corruption, Victor Makayi.

"This is yet another success in the fight to recover whatever has been stolen from the people of Zambia," Makayi said.

He did not give the name of the British firm.

"It is also a timely warning to all those entrusted with managing public resources that they should be accountable," the spokesperson said.

Funjika served as commander for the Zambia National Service under the government of former president Frederick Chiluba, who is also facing graft charges.

He was convicted in November but was given three months within which to return the £15 000 he was accused of receiving in bribes from the British firm that supplied army uniforms.

A number of other Zambian senior military officers have been tried recently for corruption, theft and abuse of authority, officials said.
