05/02/2008 16:29 - (SA)
Lusaka - Several gunmen in motorboats believed to be from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) abducted around 30 fishermen from Lake Mweru in northern Zambia in a daring early- morning raid on Tuesday, police said.
The unarmed fishermen were rounded up and shepherded away, allegedly across the border to DRC, without a struggle, other fishermen who escaped by canoe told district police commissioner Wilson Kasokolo.
Police spokesperson Bonnie Kapeso confirmed the incident in Lusaka.
The identity and motives of the abductors were unclear. Some officials suspect banditry.
Zambia's Ministries of Foreign and Home Affairs said they had mounted diplomatic efforts to have the fishermen released.
Lake Mweru straddles the border between Zambia and DRC. The abduction took Zambians by surprise as fishermen from both countries have fished peacefully side by side in the lake for centuries.
