  • Maputo - Ten illegal immigrants, who said they were on their way to South Africa, were arrested on a Maputo bound bus, state media reported on Friday.

Radio Mozambique said in a report quoting police sources in the southern province of Gaza that the 10 - seven Ethiopians and three Democratic Republic of Congo nationals - were arrested on Wednesday.

The illegal immigrants were travelling on a long distance bus from the north western province of Tete from where they had entered the country.

Police said the illegal immigrants indicated they were on their way to South Africa seeking better living conditions. The report said the illegal immigrants were detained in Maputo where they were awaiting deportation to their homes.

Since last year, Mozambique had been tough on illegal immigrants with reports of arrests of nationals from South Africa, Portugal and several African nations.

In January this year the country deported at least 80 Malians, 24 Pakistanis, 16 Bengalis, nine Ethiopians, and four Algerians who had been living illegally in Maputo.
