Gunmen kill 20 in Darfur
29/02/2008 07:27 - (SA)
Khartoum - Unidentified gunmen attacked a village in Sudan's Darfur region on Wednesday, killing about 20 civilians, said an army spokesperson on Thursday.
"It was a tribal clash, the armed forces had nothing to do with it. About 20 people were killed including the mayor of the village and a prayer leader," the spokesperson said.
International experts estimated that some 200 000 had died and 2.5 million had been forced to flee their homes since the conflict flared in 2003 after rebels took up arms against the central government, accusing it of neglecting the region.
The United States called the violence genocide. Sudan rejected this and said only 9 000 people had lost their lives.
