13 die in Nigeria road crash
03/03/2008 12:45 - (SA)
Lagos - Thirteen people were killed after the driver of a lorry smashed a stationary 18-passenger bus in the southeastern state of Imo in a bid to escape police arrest, said a witness on Monday.
"We removed 13 bodies from the wreckage of the bus, while five injured passengers were rushed to the hospital," traveller Okechukwu Arinze said.
He said the accident was caused as police pursued a lorry on Sunday.
"In a bid to escape arrest, the driver ran into a passenger bus that was parked along the road," Arinze said, who was riding in a vehicle behind the lorry when the crash took place.
Accidents were common on Nigeria's poorly maintained inter-city roads because of speeding and disregard of traffic rules.
