30 000 Kenyans flee their homes

Kitale - A Red Cross official says up to 30 000 people fled their homes in the past 24 hours as the army moved in with heavy firepower to crack down on a group linked to bloody clashes in western Kenya.
Ochiemo Cheptai of the Kenya Red Cross says the army began pursuing members of the Sabaot Land Defence Force on Sunday in scores of villages in the Mount Elgon area, bombing several villages where they are believed to be hiding.
Local lawmaker Fred Kapondi says the army is targeting civilians living in lowland villages instead of pursuing militants in their forest hideouts.
Mohamud Birik, the local district commissioner, denies the army is targeting villagers.
