A whiter shade of pale
Skin-whitening has long been a tradition in Africa, but has taken off commercially in the Middle East.

  • Nairobi - Three people have died in a displaced people's camp in Kenya's Rift Valley region, where living conditions are worsening, say police.

The three women died in Kipkelion camp as a result of squalid camp conditions, a police commander said.

Aid and rights groups warned that diseases were spreading in the camps hosting hundreds of thousands of people evicted from their villages by the violence spurred by the disputed December 27 elections. The unrest killed at least 1 500.

"People in the camps are living in deplorable conditions with no toilets. This is a violation of human rights," said Florence Jaoko, the deputy head of the state-run Kenya National Commission for Human Rights.

The Kenya Red Cross Society appealed for $23m to help resettle the displaced.

"The government continues to be concerned at the plight of the internally displaced persons and has embarked on a three month programme to resettle (them)," said government spokesperson Alfred Mutua.
