Youths rescued from trafficker

Maputo - Just a week after the passing of an anti-trafficking law, Mozambican police this week rescued at least seven youths from the central district of Muxungue who were allegedly being trafficked to South Africa, state media reported on Tuesday.
Radio Mozambique reported that the youths said members of their families living in South Africa had promised them jobs.
They were rescued after police stopped a taxi near Lindela, about 700km north of Maputo, at a routine roadblock and found they had no documents.
They had been transported in a bakkie from their homes, about 200km from the scene.
The driver of the bakkie had allegedly transferred the youths into the taxi so that they could pass the roadblock.
The driver of the bakkie was arrested and the youths were placed with social services authorities until they were returned home.
According to anti-trafficking organisations at least 1 000 Mozambican women and children are trafficked each year, mainly to South Africa where they find themselves working in prostitution or underpaid jobs.
