Maputo - Mozambique has been chosen to take part in a pilot UN programme to identify risks and enhance early warning systems in disaster-prone countries, a UN official saidon Wednesday.
Carlos Villacis, programme co-ordinator of the Global Risk Identification Programme (GRIP), said 20 countries would take part in the project, also including Nepal and Mexico.
Floods, droughts, cyclones, landslides and earthquakes are among the natural disasters that have affected Mozambique in the last five years.
In Mozambique the programme would be used to boost early warning disaster systems in high risk areas, which have been accredited with the reduction in deaths from this year's flooding.
Villacis said $20m would be used to train officials from the three countries, who would in turn train other officials.
