UN peacekeepers on the rampage
05/07/2008 14:46 - (SA)
Lagos - Hundreds of Nigerian soldiers who served as UN peacekeepers in Liberia went on the rampage in protest against the military authorities' refusal to pay their allowance, a local report said on Saturday.
The Guardian said the soldiers of the 323 Artillery Regiment were accusing the army authorities of not paying their allowance since their return from Liberia in April.
Chanting war songs and brandishing sticks and cudgels, the aggrieved soldiers who wore army fatigues, demonstrated in the southwestern town of Akure on Friday, it said.
The soldiers blocked major roads in the city and started fires to prevent the free movement of people and vehicles, the paper said.
It said panic-stricken civilian residents stayed indoors while traders closed their shops.
The army authorities were not immediately available for comment Saturday.
