Lusaka - Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa was in a stable condition on Tuesday after surgery at a hospital in France to improve his breathing after he suffered a stroke in Egypt last week, his deputy said.
"Following the minor operation (on Monday) afternoon to improve his breathing, his Excellency ... is recovering satisfactorily," vice president Rupiah Banda said in a statement.
"His breathing is much better and Dr Mwanawasa had a restful night at the Percy military hospital."
The 59-year-old Mwanawasa fell ill on the eve of an AU summit in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh last week and was then flown to the hospital on the outskirts of Paris.
Mwawanawasa has been plagued by health problems and suffered a stroke a few months before he was re-elected for a second five-year term at polls in September 2006.
