Mogadishu - Gunmen have shot dead three Somali elders who were helping aid workers distribute food in a refugee camp in the capital, Reuters has reported.

According to reports, the shooting appeared to be the latest deliberate attack on humanitarian efforts in the Horn of Africa nation, where more than one million people lived as internal refugees.

A wave of assassinations of senior humanitarian workers had shocked aid agencies and forced them to consider suspending operations. Four aid workers - two Italians, a Kenyan and a Briton - were also being held hostage, say reports.
