  • Harare - Zimbabwe's main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, announced on Thursday that it will field candidates in the March 31 elections despite deep misgivings over whether they will be free and fair.

"It is with a heavy heart that the national council has resolved that the MDC will participate in the forthcoming elections," said party spokesperson Paul Themba Nyathi.

The MDC reiterated with force its view that conditions were not in place for a democratic vote in Zimbabwe.

"More than ever the electoral field remains uneven and unequal," said Nyathi.
