Johannesburg - Squeak, the 14-year-old Jack Russell who made headlines in 2002 by refusing to leave the dead body of his owner, a Zimbabwean farmer, has died.
According to a statement by the Zimbabwean national society for the protection of animals, Squeak died "suddenly" on Thursday.
The loyal Jack Russell will be remembered for refusing to leave the body of his owner, Terry Ford, after Ford had been murdered in June 2002.
Squeak guarded Ford's body until it was found in front of the house on the family's farm, Gorie, about 30km west of Harare the next morning.
The Zimbabwe SPCA said: "Squeak refused to leave the body even while the murder was being investigated."
Afterwards, Squeak went to live with Ford's son, Mark, in Australia.
Later that year, Squeak had a stroke, but recovered compeletely. However, he had to continue taking medication.
"We are very sad about Squeak's death. At last, Terry has been reunited with his loyal dog friend," said the SPCA.
Squeak received the Elizabeth Lewyt Award for Humane or Compassionate Animals from the US North Shore Animal League in July 2002.
