Harare - A Zimbabwean man has been sentenced to an effective nine years in prison after he tied an eight-year-old girl to a tree, before raping her 12-year-old sister in front of her.

Kemias Zvigoyo, 24, pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court, but was later convicted of the charge, The Herald reported.

He was sentenced to 12 years, of which three years were conditionally suspended.

According to prosecutor Emmanuel Muchenga, Zvigoyo met the two girls while herding cattle in Chiweshe.

Zvigoyo ran after them and grabbed the younger sister. The older sister later surrendered herself to the man.

After the sexual assault, the man threatened to kill the sisters if they reported the matter.
