Mugabe warns against rebellion
15/08/2006 15:12 - (SA)
Harare - Zimbabwe's security forces are ready to crush any act of rebellion against the government, says President Robert Mugabe and have warned that the defence forces have men and women ready to defend the country's sovereignty, say reports.
Mugabe, who was the commander-in-chief of the defence forces, was speaking on Defence Forces Day. The threat came in the wake of plans by the main opposition and labour union to stage protests.
No firm date had been set yet for the protests and strikes by the Movement for Democratic Change and the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions.
But, economic and social conditions were worsening for the population of 12 million people.
The rate of inflation was almost 1 000%, making it difficult for the majority of wage-earners to make ends meet.
The government had launched a controversial money changeover. It was now mandatory for all Zimbabweans to exchange their old money for new banknotes carrying three less zeros.
The process had caused confusion and added hardship to the plight of struggling Zimbabweans. Some commentators had warned that the process could spark riots, if people were left with worthless money on their hands after the old banknotes expired on August 21.
